France is to establish a centre of excellence for artificial intelligence in the city of Rennes, ignoring a US veto within NATO on its creation. The initiative is turning into a diplomatic standoff, as the Americans seek to retain control over the strategic field of military AI and support their champion Palantir.

NATO: Paris makes its move to counter US withdrawal

Washington's sudden announcement of a withdrawal of half its strategic bombers from NATO has left the Europeans in a bind. France is offering its naval and air assets to offset this and is urging its allies to invest in their national capabilities rather than funding joint equipment.

NATO to set up its AI centre in France

La Lettre can reveal that Rennes, a city already home to France's leading cyber-defence cluster, has been chosen to host the Atlantic alliance's Centre of excellence for artificial intelligence. Initiated last summer by France's then defence minister, the project is due to be formally approved by the other NATO countries in early June.
